10.1.12

when she who loves to hear stories about when she was a baby climbs up the stool to wash her painted hands and she practically gasps saying, "mom! it's actually clean up here!" and you laugh at her honesty and laugh that it's been so long since you cleaned the bathroom counters that she's happily surprised and somehow in your warped thinking you decide that not cleaning the bathroom for this long was a good choice because look at the joy she has now!

when dramatically violent pain surges through because they earn their own money now and can spend it as they (thoughtfully) please and they choose that which i would never choose. letting them make choices about buying a 49er hat with a (forced) smile and nod, trying to embrace all our differences no matter how many deaths i'm dying inside.

when choosing one's own clothes is important to keeping peace, we get partially gawked at in the school hallways with loving smiles of understanding moms who probably don't fight that fight either.

when prepping dinner in the kitchen is put on hold to watch the circus in the family room because the cushions and pillows are suited for the floor, too, apparently.
he starts standing on the end table, which he pulled forward from the home i gave it.

then does a double bounce, once on each pillow in front of the end table, and climbs up the self-created mountain

hops onto the chair

flips and slides

into a forward roll

just to do it all over again.

the green boat, handed down from other now-grown boys, to be thrown into the ocean and brought back by the waves. again and again. with excitement and dancing each time it washes ashore.

When we insist that he roll up his pants and "don't get your pants wet, bud", and he insists on the opposite.

9.14.2012

The "I love you, too, Mom"'s that happen here are enough to melt me into a puddle, each said in its own way, each special because of the mouth from which it comes.

9.6.2012

this ongoing game of baby where they take turns being the baby and walk around and tell each other what to do and say "i'm proud of you" to everything the baby does and they take as many toys as they can manage and make a big mess in the living room.

"logan knocked my tooth out with his head."

"my teef too, mom"

8.28.2012

reading the book that was my childhood favorite, Ramona Quimby, Age 8, to my very own 8 year old and 6 year old and laughing together at the parts that i remember being funny way back when i read it for the first time. "Give me my eraser, Yard Ape" and "This is Bruce who doesn't wee-wee in the sandbox".

glad they consented to this read. (finally)

"Boys, what do you think is around that corner?"
"ticks"
"a mountain lion"
"more poo"
"a waterfall. please, a waterfall."

More tall "tick grass". And a lovely butte. Should have known.

8.21.2012

what's your favorite part about school?

his first night of math homework ever. he did it willingly (!), with enthusiasm, even (!).
i am thankful and excited and prayerful that he will be a lover of learning.

8.15.2012

We drive in the car on our way to buy groceries and she says from the backseat, "mom. mommy. i call daddy wyan. i call him wyan when we westle."

she tells him long stories
about her first day
long, long stories

me to the youngest, alone together for quite possibly the first time ever: "dylan, what are your hopes and dreams for this year?"

dylan: (long pause, awkward stare): "juice"

8.6.2012

On the day they begin another school year, first and third grades, there is excitement, crazy joy, deep longing, nervous expectation, unsure willingness, surrender to trust, prayerful tears, peace, assurance and wondering if they will have enough to eat.

Fingers are pried back, grip loosens.

8.5.12

for the most part he thinks he needs to only say the last word in his sentences and that everything before that can sound like, "uh huh huh uh huh uh uh uh". "uh huh huh uh huh uh uh uh bite" means "don't let the bed bugs bite."

7.30.2012

"Will you teach me how to do the laundry? I'd like to learn so I can help. Then there will be more people to do it and it will be easier."

7.24.2012

their dessert of choice, drumsticks cones, and walking single file around the yard while eating them.

7.19.2012

"today was a good day for laughing" they said of each other, best friends this day.
