when you read through 1 Samuel this month each night after dinner and decide together that this story of David, and especially when he defeats the giant, is one of your favorite stories because David is brave and little and we can relate to the little part and want to be the brave part.

and then when you get a letter from the sweet 5 year old girl who you met through Compassion and she draws you a picture of David defeating the giant and says that she loves this story because David is so brave and you know that somehow these words of truth and tales from thousands of years before are the common space for near-strangers and friends and family.

because the hope and power of truth is a solid ground for any relationship.
